Javiera Navarrete M.A. – Spanish Instructor
Who Am I?
¡Hola! My name is Javiera Navarrete M.A. I am a Chilean journalist and instructor for Spanish and philosophy. I moved to Memphis 7 years ago, on August 2013, planning to learn English and get a Masters degree. In the past 7 years, I earned a Masters in Romance Languages – Spanish, formed a lovely family, and acquired a passion for teaching Spanish with a special focus on Spanish Heritage Speakers.
My job: I have taught Spanish in Memphis for a while. I have taught at the University of Memphis since 2014 and have also taught Spanish in Catholic private Schools (K-12th). I have loved every single moment of my teaching career: from singing a song in Spanish to little kids, to reading a novel with my High School Heritage Speakers or doing an oral interview with my college students.
My experiences at University of Memphis, Immaculate Conception Cathedral School (as a High School teacher) and at Holy Rosary Catholic School opened my eyes to the reality that there’s a lack of support for Heritage Language teachers as for Heritage as well. Most universities don’t offer preparation courses for these teachers, instead focusing primarily on teachers of second-language learners. With this website my goal is to provide that guidance, while I am also learning and improving my teaching. I want to improve the Heritage Spanish program. My goal it is to share with you resources and experiences then we can improve our Heritage Spanish programs as a Spanish Heritage teachers community.
Spanish Instructor at the University of Memphis for the past 6 years. Spanish 1010, 1020, 2010 and 2020. High School Spanish Teacher at Immaculate Conception Cathedral School. High School teacher. Spanish 1, 2, 3, 4 and Spanish for Heritage Speakers . Former Spanish Teacher at Holy Rosary Catholic School (K – 8th grade). I am member of The American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages (ACTFL) and also of the Tennessee Foreign Language Teaching Association (TFLTA) in where I have been a presenter two times.
Currently, I attend online webinars at the University of Memphis: Foundations for Online course development. During this pandemic (Covid – 19), I have sharpened my online teaching skills by offering courses for the University of Memphis and Immaculate Conception High School.
